UYO & Ulster Orchestra at BBC Proms» 04 August 2012
Summer Residential Symphony Orchestra Course and Concerts
90 members of the UYO, aged between 15 and 22 years, will meet for a 9-day residential course to be held at Greenmount Agricultural College, Antrim from the 13th to the 21st of July, 2012. The rehearsal programme will be in preparation for two major events, Nest and a joint Prom concert with the Ulster Orchestra in the Royal Albert Hall.

Rehearsals in Greenmount will also be scheduled to include preparation for a joint concert with the Ulster Orchestra in the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC’s Promenade Season on Saturday the 4th of August, 2012. Combined rehearsals with the Ulster Orchestra will take place on Monday the 30th of July, Tuesday the 31st of July and Wednesday the 1st of August.
The conductor will be the Ulster Orchestra’s Principal Conductor, JoAnn Falletta, the flute soloist will be Sir James Galway. The repertoire will include Chabrier’s España which the UYO will perform on its own. The Ulster Orchestra will then take the stage with Sir James (his first Proms concert in over a decade) for Mozart’s Flute Concerto No.2, to be rejoined by the Ulster Youth Orchestra (153 players in total) for a performance of Stravinsky's Firebird (1911 version) and the world premiere of Elaine Agnew's Dark Hedges.
In the Olympic year, the BBC has decided to invite all the national youth orchestras of Great Britain to perform at the Proms over the period Saturday the 4th of August, 2012 to Monday the 6th of August, 2012. The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain will perform on the evening of the 4th of August and over the ensuing two days the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland will perform jointly with the BBC Scottish Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Wales will perform with the BBC Welsh Orchestra.
Members of the UYO are already practising their parts gearing themselves up to this eagerly awaited programme of activity which promises musical experiences to be long remembered and a high point in the history of the Orchestra’s achievements.
